Balloon sinus dilation (also called balloon sinuplasty) technology gives our physicians additional tools for endoscopic surgery. Balloon sinus dilation uses a catheter-based device designed to clear blocked sinuses, restore normal sinus drainage and function, and preserve normal anatomy and mucosal tissue. Dr. Sigari uses advanced diagnostic tools to determine when it is appropriate to use the balloon sinus dilation. The balloon sinus dilation system creates a durable opening and assists our physicians to achieve the goals of sinus surgery.
Post-procedure, the size of the dilated opening is approximately that of the nominal diameter of the selected sinus balloon catheter (from 3.5mm to 7mm).
Balloon sinus dilation procedure may not require general anesthesia and in many cases the patient is able to resume normal activities within 24 hours.
Balloon sinus dilation technology may be used with other medical therapies or FESS techniques. Additionally, using these devices should not limit future treatment options for patients with progressive disease. Each patient suffering from sinusitis is different. Only after thorough examinations and discussions between the patient and a qualified otolaryngologist can it be determined whether a patient may benefit from the Balloon Sinuplasty™ system.
The Balloon Sinuplasty technology offers several advantages to the traditional FESS approach. Although it is often done in conjunction to traditional endoscopic sinus surgery often it can be used as a first step procedure before making permanent changes in the sinus anatomy. This aspect makes this technology very useful in clinical situations and especially in Pediatric cases. More recently, Dr Sigari has been able to offer this intervention to select patients as an in-office procedure which can avoid the need for general anesthesia.
